American High is a Californian 60’s and 70s rock n’ roll band mixed with some 80’s and 90’s punk rock, and they ARE NOT afraid to speak their minds.
What caught our attention was the fact that they’re a band that believes in the intrinsic worth of every human being, even if they don’t have power and/or money.
In their eyes, there are things that just aren’t up for a vote. “The person you chose to love and marry is not up for a vote. Your right to decide to worship God (or not worship at all) is not up for a vote,” says American High.
The newest song title alone, “Cheye Calvo,” says a lot about this band and their message. Cheye Calvo (the Mayor of Berwyn Heights, Maryland) is a man who found himself on the receiving end no-knock police raid.
According to CATO, “Despite being quickly cleared of any wrongdoing, police never apologized for gunning down his dogs and posing a threat to his family.”
The band’s message surely did spread, because the video for “Cheye Calvo” recently won the PureM Music Awards for Best US Music Video and is being played on BBC6 currently. You can watch their music video here: HERE.
With a catchy beat and powerful lyrics like, ” I guess I don’t care what my neighbor’s smokin’ / If you do, do you care enough to put lives on the line? / Well that’s a real crime!,” and “What if you knew me? / What if it could show?,” we feel this band is definitely worth a listen.
